Reserve your PAID flight now. Then add the CP later.
Some have suggested booking the companion as paid (points) now as well and then cancel later and immediately add back in. There is of course the risk the seat will not pop back up, but no real risk in trying. I did have a sold out situation once and had to keep checking hourly the day before the flight until a seat opened up.
