If you spent €1500 on an economy ticket, then it was pretty likely to have been a fully-flexible fare. These sort of tickets tend to retain their value even after a no-show, which is not the case for the vast majority of economy tickets sold.

Do not base a strategy on this sort of "outlier" - this sort of outcome would not happen if you had a cheap APEX €299 ticket. Bear in mind that the OP was talking about a ticket with a base fare of £1. For longhaul....
