Thanks for all the suggestions - they have certainly helped to clear the confusion in my brain ,

My original post was predicated on two longhaul IB segments (2 x 120 points) being credited within 8 weeks of the flights. In spite of faxing the claim form from the web with copy boarding passes THREE times and a telephone conversation with EC (in India, I think), the EC person I spoke to last week said they had not received my documentation! They promised to put the missing flights 'on the spreadsheet' (whatever that means) so I hope they are credited soon.

If so, a quick weekend trip to Malaga looks likely .
