Of course if the poster above has indeed got his home VPN consistently working in China, that would be interesting news, and especially interesting if he can provide a detailed layout of how to set it up and keep it running day in and day out.
Shadowsocks pretty much always works unless it gets IP banned due to excessive traffic (this did happen once, after I pushed about 10 GB of video uploads from Shanghai Disneyland to Youtube, and hence Shadowsocks got dropped to #3 priority from #1 ). I always travel with the following VPNs, and use them in this order of preference:
1. ExpressVPN
2. VPN.ac
3. Shadowsocks on personal server
4. HK SIM card
5. AT&T SIM card

If all of them go down simultaneously, the Earth probably got hit by a meteorite and I've got bigger problems than where I'm getting my internet access from.
