i book point reservations for trips fairly far ahead - often plans change so not being able to cancel makes those points rather useless
If you're booking with points, why book far ahead? The price is fixed, so unless you're concerned that a location will get sold out, there's no reason to book points reservations until a couple of days before the trip.
