UA may have not wanted you to leave from a co-terminal (assuming FLL, MCO, and MIA are co-terminals in the first place) because of the traffic conditions you encountered and the fact that they probably had no clue how many people were going to show-up for each flight.
FYI- MIA and FLL
are co-terminals. MCO is not a co-terminal with either one of those airports. Which is why possibly they would not honor you ticket.
I understand the panic to get out and get home, but like others have stated the news made everyone aware the hurricane was coming well in advance.
