I've just had a fantastic stay at the Sofitel Frankfurt Opera. It was just a one night stay, but definitely a wonderful experience from start to finish.
This was my first stay at a Sofitel, so it was important for me that everything be perfect. And I'm happy to say it really was. I was able to check in early at 11 AM and the friendly receptionist told me that I had been given a Luxury room (this would be a double upgrade then because I had originally booked a Classic room), although the room I was given looks exactly like a Superior room on the hotel's website. Not that it matters one way of the other as the room was wonderful, cosy and smelled really lovely. I finally got to experience the famous Sofitel MyBed and I can now understand why so many people here rave about it - it really is incredibly comfortable and different from the beds I've had in other hotels. Somebody likened it to sleeping on a cloud and it certainly felt that way.
The design of the room is really beautiful, it's probably the most beautiful room I've had in a hotel so far. The only thing that ruins the otherwise perfect impression are those horrible stained bathroom floor tiles, which frankly beggar belief.
Speaking of the bathroom, the toiletries in the rooms are Lanvin (I think they have Hermes in the suites), but I called housekeeping and they were more than happy to bring me some Hermes toiletries as well.
I also ordered another pillow from the pillow menu, but in the end found the original feather pillow much better.
Thanks to previous reviewers' useful contributions, I decided not to have breakfast at the hotel. I did however have my welcome drink at the Lily's bar. The voucher was valid for champagne and all sorts of drinks, excluding cocktails. The bartender sort of reluctantly agreed to fix me a G&T.
The welcome amenity arrived in the afternoon and it was a nice box with handmade sweets from Tunisia. A lovely and elegant touch that I expect from a Sofitel.
There was turndown service in the evening, with toiletries and towels replaced. No chocolates, like Starflyergold mentioned, just herbal tea and more water.
There is a spa in the basement with a sauna and a quiet room for relaxation and also a pool which the hotel shares with a health club next door. The temperature of the water in the pool was ideal, unfortunately I'd arrived just as a water aerobics class was starting so had to leave as the class had taken over most of the pool.
The location is very good, next to the beautiful opera building, just a 5 minute walk from the Taunusanlage S-Bahn station and a 10-15 minute walk to the city centre. The soundproofing is perfect, I didn't hear anything from either the outside or the inside of the hotel.
I'm sure there are better Sofitels out there, but I thought this was a great start. I would certainly go back if the price was good again. It seems that prices are higher on weekdays than on weekends, which works great for me as I'm a leisure traveller.
