FWIW we will likley take cattle class to LAX, stay at one of the ok hotels there and then fly into ogg on xmas day.
No, they don't owe you anything. Even EU261 (which clearly wouldn't apply here anyway) does not provide for compensation for flight changes/cancellations more than 14 days out and US laws don't provide for anything unless you are IDB'd on the day of the flight (you have a confirmed ticket and are denied boarding due to overbooking). DOT IDB comp does not apply to flight cancellations (whether due to advance schedule changes, weather, MX, etc.).
