Actually, I took a closer look on the ITA Fare Matrix, and I see there are some good options through ORD and DFW in a 787, if you're already ticketed in J, go for that, it'll give you a better experience. You might have to really fight to get them to put you on Hawaiian interisland codeshares though.

Personally, I'd take the 787 via ORD, it gets you there faster, maximizes your time on the widebody and reduces your time on narrow-bodies.
