I flew to HKG from SFO in 1980. UA got me as far as HNL. Then sat around a few hours before boarding the SQ HNL-HKG flight that left after midnight.
Coming back was funny. HNL customs fined us for having beef jerky. And simply gave us a verbal warning regarding fireworks in the checked-in luggage...

Extinguishing their cigarettes didn't make the smoke go away. There were ash trays in the arm rests. People used to put their chewing gum in there.
