Don't under-estimate the size of the market for "People that live in DEN and hate UA". It is a quite sizable demographic.
I do get strange looks when I board early with my four-year old, and they say it's not time for kids yet and she replies "I'm elite". If you travel a lot for work and need a cheap way to drop the kids off with grandparents in Florida, it's not challenging to get status on both airlines.
