It doesn't matter whether OP used points or cash, they will not get a free bag. You have to use the UA card on United.com to get a free bag. If you paid a random travel agent (or in this case, Expedia) how the heck would UA know what card you used?

OP screwed up. You get what you pay for. As others said, if you wanna bring a roll-aboard, it will be in the cargo hold. Lesson learned.

Edit: Actually I take that back. If OP gets BG2 by virtue of their credit card, they can bring the bag along as a carryon at the gate. You do not have to purchase on UA.com with the card for that perk.
