What is going on with United?

Update:
LAX to SFO
Basic economy ticket, which comes with more restrictive rules. That's all.

There is no option to pay a fee for a carry on. As basic economy, you can bring on a personal item, but not a regular size carry on. A regular carry on needs to be checked.

What is the benefit then for baggage?
Purchased through Chase travel site
Certain UA-branded cards allow a free checked bag, but you have to use the card for purchase. I don't believe any of the no fee cards (like TravelBank) include a bag, so you'd be charged normal price.

the no fee card may not qualify

Did the Chase site not warn you that you were buying a Basic Economy ticket (Does not Chase use Expedia?)
Purchasing through the Chase Travel site should generate an option to pay basic economy or a regular fare. Not as much of a warning as the UA site, but there is soemthing.
