With regards to your suggestion of booking a J ticket only once you know the product you're getting, QR will be thrilled. However, your tactic of booking last minute will obviously come at a far higher price, so perhaps not ideal for most; although the QR Revenue Management team will be grateful.

I'd say that the idea is not to book QR because one is unsure of the seat rather than still book QR but at the last minute.
That is going to be my stance after my upcoming trip.
