Cash or points makes no difference in my experience. Neither will using the app to check in. You're just telling them what time you will arrive and some hotels will allocate you a room in advance. Nothing stops you discussing your room when you actually arrive. Depending on the hotel, the app may show your allocated room type. No fixed pattern to this.

But your primary problem is not cash or points or checking in on the app. It's that you're Gold and every Platinum, Titaniium and Ambassador is ahead of you in the upgrade queue. In order to avoid disappointment, your expectation should be that you will get the room you paid for. Even if they tell you that it's been upgraded then it could just be to a high floor or a side of the hotel with the prettier view so won't necessarily feel like a room upgrade.
