Excessive single use plastics

Yesterday I flew Y on the relatively short hop from VIE to LHR. On short haul Y. I rarely partake in BOB choosing to grab a snack in the lounge if I’m peckish, This was my plan yesterday too, but due to air traffic delays in LHR coz of some fog, we had to wait 50 mins from boarding until we were off. This meant I decided to grab lunch and a coffee on board.

I should point out that the crew pro actively brought around water prior to departure. This was welcome and was single use piece of plastic number one of 19 I used during my 100 minute flight.

I chose the M+S Christmas Turkey Sandwich, the tapas and a coffee and some more water. I was staggered by the following:-

1. Pre Departure plastic water cup
2. Sandwich box with plastic window
3. Coffee cup with plastic lid
5. Futher plastic cup in where were placed....
5, 6, 7, 8. 4 milk sachets (despite saying I only need a dash of milk)
9. Plastic water bottle
10. Plastic bag for coffee bag
11. Coffee bag itself
TAPAS
12. Plastic label to seal box
13. Plastic bag for paper napkin
14. Plastic tub for cheese
15. Plastic tub for Sobrasada
16. Plastic bag for ham
17. Plastic sheet on which the 5 pieces of ham sat
18. Plastic bag for breadsticks/biscuits
19. Plastic bags for Olives

Quite astounding, although I was given a wooden stirrer!

Fag packet maths say that a full flight of 170 passengers, eating what I did on 6 sectors a day would means that one A320 on BA could be responsible for producing nearly 20,000 pieces of plastic. I appreciate in reality this scenarios would never play out, but I would have honestly been staggered if the number was 2000!
