I don't really have an answer for the second part (which I acknowledge is the real question) but just for context on the first part... Normal economy rewards book in to X. Business rewards in to I. But when AC introduced PY, they did not carve out a specific bucket for PY rewards; all of the other letters were in use:
- Business: J, C, D, Z, P; R for upgrades; I for rewards
- Premium economy: O, E, N
- Latitude: Y, B
- Flex: M, U, H, Q, V, W, G
- Tango: L, S, T, A, K; F used for some sort of AC Vacations thing
- Economy rewards: X
Did they really need all those different letters for Flex and Tango, you might think? Evidently AC felt they did.
In any case, we now live in this weird world where PY rewards are some sort of subset of N space with no transparency. Similar story for eUps to PY, I think.
