I've noticed that on the new Panasonic IFE OS, the announcement isn't nearly as loud... it just seems to pause the audio, and only plays a very light version of the announcement, allowing the main cabin speakers to deliver most of the audio.
The crew has some control on some aircraft, but not nearly as much as I'd like. On others (737, maybe airbus?) I don't believe the setting is up to the crew.

After the first time I sat in row 1 on a UA 737 and heard the working crew... well let's just say I'm much more careful about what topics my galley conversations consist of. Frankly, when you spend as much time on the aircraft as we do, it's easy to become complacent and forget that others can hear us.
