6th August
Winelands to Swellendam via Hermanus
the day started with breakfast at Erinvale- a cold buffet with various options was included and also a la carte selection from a menu. I went for the French toast

another photo of the estate in the light

the plan was fairly loose today, broadly going along the coast to Cape Agulhas and then onwards to somewhere to spend the night

pants is not one to stop and take photos; we stopped in Hermanus for lunch but regrettably no whales were sighted (you have to sit still for longer than 5 seconds for that!!)

I did manage to pap some proteas on the way to the cape (my favourite flowers)

and then the cape itself, and the boardwalk and surrounding scenery

The actual southernmost point of Africa was far more peaceful and less touristed, seems like there are heaps of walks and things to do if you have a bit of time to hang around

we decided we did not have time to hang around, and pants was in the process of dying of man flu in addition to his usual level of tired and cranky
Looking at the map, the most logical seemed to be Swellendam, so we headed there, and wound up staying at Schoone Oordt country house, which was rather nice (https://www.schooneoordt.co.za/)

My only real whinge is that the wifi was completely non existent outside of the main house, which was of course not where any of the rooms were located...but that really is a minor whinge in the scheme of things

the hotel was not serving dinner that night so booked us into Field and Fork, a local produce restaurant based in one of the museums in town (I believe the old jail?) https://www.fieldandfork.co.za/

we got massively lost on the walk there but that did mean we could take in some of the sights at night

Pants was so poorly he didn’t even want to eat anything (frankly we were all surprised that he pulled through in the end!

I went for the Kudu Carpaccio (because why not?), which was very good

I followed up with the black Angus fillet, which was of course better than anything BA could serve up on the plane

And finally the sticky toffee pudding, which I force fed most of to the afflicted (I credit this with his survival)
