In fact LAX staff frequently shuffle people between the two to manage op ups and other things. I've also had a long delay on both flights, due to tech issues.
I take CX883 when I want to get out of dodge and CX881 when I want a dinner in LAX before flying back. Both get HKG in time for the morning connections bank, and I have reasons for wanting to take either when I'm just flying to HKG.
Obviously CX882 has a long time on the ground due to afternoon arrival, while CX880 performs a turnaround at LAX. But I have seen a delayed CX880 cause
both CX883 and CX881 to be delayed in separate instances. What I think it means is I suspect in the very unlikely event CX880 is delayed (it is quite a predictable long haul flight), a decision is made by CX control which return flight to delay based on loads, crew issues, and no doubt other factors etc. It isn't some rule based decision "always delay CX883" or "always delay CX881". They have some flexibility there and like I said I've seen them switch the rotation for a delay. Maybe the fact you have 6 cash seats in F will protect your flight. Honestly I think it's a strong factor, although there are many other factors you can't see..
I think you're looking for a little control over something where it might not exist

. Sounds similar to my marriage.
Congratulations btw!
Thanks for the insightful response. I believe the responses I'm getting are more targeted toward IRROPS, but I was more asking a hypothetical, "if CX were to draw back 21x weekly LAX flights to 17x or 14x, which flight would be the most likely to be cancelled?". We're already refugees off of the YVR-HKG flight where F was eliminated, and were luckily able to get everyone on one flight out of LAX. I know there is nothing that can be done if 883 is cancelled, but I was only wondering if there is a reduction in seats, which flights would go first (and I know nobody here knows that for sure).
