There are indeed, as already mentioned above, the option to store your luggage once you are land side. Narita's website has the details.
I've flown UA dozens of times from US to Tokyo, laying over overnight (more than 12 hours but less than 24 hours) and continuing on to another destination on NH, on a UA ticket. Every time I try to check my luggage through to my final destination, but only once or twice was I successful. Just now I'm on one of these trips. The agent tried but told me that her computer would only let her do it for layovers of less than 12 hours, so I had to retrieve my luggage at NRT. I think it should be legal because NRT has a bonded storage for up to 24 hours.
