This is true. Although whether getting through would have been of any use is debatable.
I spent many an hour behind a BA check-in desk in a previous life, and during a particularly nasty fog delay a shiny-card holder let rip at me when the entire day's operation was canned: "So NASA can land on the moon, but BA can't land in the fog?" My response (one which I'm quite proud of) was: "I don't believe there is any fog on the moon, sir".
