Mrs. Xyzzy received renewal approval the other day as I reported. The email that was received indicated she could schedule an interview or use interview on arrival. This evening we figured we'd look at what interviews might be pen at airports we will be passing through in the next few days. Sure enough - it appears that the interview section of the approval process screen has green check marks - no approval is required!
