I do agree that Apple is extremely overpriced.
At 5 years, the resale value of most laptops converge towards zero, that the delta is insignificant be it from Dell to HP or Lenovo.
The exception are Apple laptops, which is precisely why they're NOT overpriced (compare say 9333-series XPS 13 to a Late 2013 Macbook Pro).

But it's a moot point since most people are staunchy for or against 1-platform from the get-go (see: OP)

We have different tolerances then. Most laptops are limited in what can be upgraded, so performance falls off compared to software demands. Physically, hinges start to go, creek sets in, battery loses capacity, ports become outdated, etc. Advances come so quick that newer model becomes attractive in value proposition. Hence used pricing are what they are for the used products.

Apple tends to age better than most, which is of course also reflected in their used prices. But thats veering off topic. For both my private and personal use I've settled on a 3 year cycle.
