I did want to mention that flying as a customer of size on southwest, if they're on your route, is advantageous. You preboard and get a reserved seat next to you for no extra cost.

And depending on your size don't forget to look into the cost of F fares.
Haven't tried myself, but the Delta policy seems to contradict your first point:

SkyMiles credit is not automatically tracked for the purchase of an extra seat and must be requested by the SkyMiles member after travel. For additional information, please contact Delta Sales Support or Delta Reservations for assistance.
