Actually see my reply, I've done that with my wife's Lexus. All I needed to do is call AMEX ahead to approve the charge at the amount I wanted, and apparently since I have such great history with them, they activated "no preset spending limit" or some marketing catch phrase and allowed me a one-time charge higher than my "preset spending pattern".... whatever, it works the same, just needed a phone call.
