Why wouldn't this work if you're willing to throw away the paid passenger's return ticket? Just do OLCI for both passengers and have the companion board alone. Are they really going to pull the companion off the plane when the paid passenger no-shows?
Obviously you can't double book or the system will cancel one of the bookings.
I also think the likelihood of companion being unable to fly the return are near 0. I cannot see a GA coming on board to remove companion at close of boarding because main passenger never boarded. Which is the only real scenario where DL could figure this out (assuming direct flights).
Also, FWIW, I have been explicitly told by agents multiple times that I should double book myself when I had plans change and the flight I couldn’t take was super cheap (less than change fee so no residual value).
