I wouldn't say they're commoditized today. Still some big differences from model to model, line to line and brand to brand today.
Up until very recently, MS surface laptops still had a proprietary charger instead of standardizing on USB-C. That's a huge no no for me, personally. I have a recent model Lenovo X1 and the fingerprint reader is laughably poor, nullifying how nice the Windows Hello feature is. (It's good in other respects).
I've not been a big fan of Dell though I've cycled through their personal and pro line for over a decade. But their recent Latitude models are superb. Good screens, good builds, good port selection, good battery life, good keyboards, etc etc. That would be the first place I look. And they obviously have business warranty option with next-day repairs. Though I wouldn't expect 5 years out of one.
