Mid Jan (summer) is when many Australians are on holidays. People progressively go back to work depending on how many weeks leave they take. After Australia Day (26Jan) most people are back. Schools/universities start the new academic year late Jan/early Feb. Australian tennis Open [20 Jan to 2 Feb 2020] in Melbourne is on during the last weeks of Jan/Feb. Hence flights are busy in January and Aussie freq flyers will take any award they can get (from at 355 days out)
Do not like your chances of an award on ~17 Jan 2020. But keep looking. Monday 27 Jan may have a better chance.
