IMHO book what you find for 2 people we you see it. Many others are also looking for AU-USA flights. Your preferred option may never happen (for 2 people). Awards can be changed. BNE does seem to have better availability than SYD & MEL
J is far better than PE, but transiting and then another flight for several hours is also not that appealing for some folk.
