Is your run AA or BA marketed? If BA marketed and you can upgrade with Avios and if they allow you to use their Avios and credit to AA, it may well credit as F. But some airlines won’t allow you to use their instruments and credit to a partner airline. These may be questions for the BA forum, in terms of upgrading a BA marketed and operated flight with Avios (and crediting to AA).

If AA marketed, you may be limited as to upgrading.
