And to balance it, I try to show some humility and call the western Finland capital by the Finnish name. (Also, in swedish that name sounds a bit like 'Fool's island" which is fitting...)

Well, one reason is the high risk of making spelling mistakes in Finnish for me.


Perhaps off-topic, but I've heard of Finns who no longer knows the original name of a place or a street in their mother tongue and thus needs to construct a name by guessing or translating from the other language. Some silly examples (I know the names below probably are too well known for mistakes, so only provided to demonstrate the issue)

Some places have distinct, non-related names in both languages (Åbo - Turku, Jakobstad - Pietarsaari) These are simple, you either know them in both languages or you don't. You simply can't derive one from the other. (Pietarsaari actually is derived by translation from the neighbouring commune Pedersöre!)

Some places have only a name in one of the languages and the other language copied it exactly, without adapting it to its language rules. (Alajärvi - Alajärvi, Salo - Salo, Somero - Somero) These are even simpler, everyone knows them.

Some places have original name in one language and the other language copied the sounds but made the spelling true to its own language rules. (Vanda - Vantaa, Tikkurila - Dickursby, Malmi - Malm, Esbo - Espoo) These are slightly tricky as people may confuse spelling or use the "wrong" one, like speaking swedish and saying Tikkurila or speaking Finnish and saying Vanda. And Swedes typically uses 'Vanta', ie the Finnish name with Swedish spelling. (again - silly examples for demonstration purposes)

Some places have a original name in one language and the other language translated them, or translated parts of the name or looks like a derivation (Sandkulla - Hiekkaharju, Villmanstrand - Lappeenranta, Tavastehus - Hämeenlinna) These can be very tricky. Imagine you have forgotten the name Sandkulla. You know it is called Hiekkaharju and then you try to translate it to Swedish. You might end up with 'Sandås'. For Tavastehus, an educated guess makes you call it 'Tavasteborg'. Imagine the confusion for the listener.
