Why are return flights under a week generally much more expensive?

Hi all. New to FT so might be a fairly rookie question but one to which i can't seem to find the answer to.

In regards to LH flights. Why do they tend to go over the £1K mark if for example i want to travel on any given Monday then back on the Friday? Say for example from LHR to ICN. I can pick any month i want and if im doing a 7 day round trip the flights on average will be between £300-£400. Now if i cut that down to 4 days it suddenly jumps to over £2K for the return trip regardless of cabin. I assume there is some reason for this?
