For those extolling the virtues of the Heathrow Express (HEX)- a few pointers for those who don't know:
HEX costs up to £14. Tube is about £4.
HEX only goes to Paddington (15 min from T123, but more for T4). Your 6 zone Tube ticket can get you to most of London, or again for a bit more you can get a combined bus/tube/rail ticket. For me, living on the east side of town, it would take longer for me to get to Heathrow using the HEX than taking the ordinary tube.
Luggage is an issue. The underground is not fantastic in making life easy for people with suitcases. Avoid changing from the Piccadilly lines to Jubillee via the foot tunnel as the lift has never seemed to work! When I used to live in North London I'd take a minicab to either Russel Square or Caledonian Rd stations as there were lifts there and maybe only 1 or 2 steps to the platform.
Basically, what mode of transport you take depends on where you are in London, how much luggage you have, how fine you are cutting it to checkin (not adviseable with traffic or rail delays and extra security checks etc) and how much you are willing to pay.
Bring on CrossRail! An east-west link between Heathrow, West End, City and East London with limited stops and big trains. Roll on 2012!!
