2 separate bookings for a connection: risks?

Hi everyone
I found a good deal with an award flight from USA to AMS, but need to get a connecting flight to my final destination in Europe. Both are operated by KLM.
if I book both with miles it doubles my award cost, making the US-Europe leg the same price in miles as Europe-Europe, aka a terrible deal.

I can book the US-europe leg with miles and book the europe-europe leg with $ for about $150.
I will have 2 hours to make the connection in AMS and no checked luggage.

My worry is if my US flight has major delays. Is this too risky?
Will KLM basically refuse to provide a replacement flight because i "missed" my connection?

I don't want to be stranded there for the holiday but the cost of a single booking is just insane,
