Hotel industry pre-authorizations expire automatically if the transaction is not completed (i.e. closing the pre-authorization) within 15 days. There’s no point in pre-authorizing today for a stay due in january. A merchant may still try to submit a transaction under an expired authorization (it’s called a late presentment) but there’s no guarantee the cc issuer will pay it, especially if the account no longer has any available funds.
