There is also a new Westin in Taipei which I hear is very modern and stylish. However it's in a mostly business area. For me, the Grand Hyatt remains the best choice.

Another option is to choose a good cheap local hotel. Nearby the Hyatt downtown is a nice little place called the Dynasty Hotel. It's low cost yet the rooms are comfortable, the service is very good and they speak English.
