A while back in an ABC-DEF-JKL seat configuration, someone was sitting in my K chatting with another someone in L. His reserved seat was J, and apparently they were counting having the three seat section for themselves. Given I did show up, their plan B was to offer me the J seat, which I accepted as my wife was in F.

But I wasn’t entirely happy because my wife had thought for months, we wouldn’t be sitting together, a snowballing anticipation perhaps worse than the event itself. If she had wanted to sleep, I may well have stuck with my middle seat to separate the chatterboxes for some peace and quiet.
