I was at the Pen and WA this spring. The Pen is close to the WA. It was renovated I think in 2017? Close to WFJ too, which is good for tourist. Not close close but relatively compared to some of the other hotels on the list. A few blocks away from the closest metro stations so take that into consideration. Rosewood is still my favorite in terms of design but it’s in a businessy area. Sanlitun seems to be popular with my expat friends, but I wouldn’t recommend for a tourist.
Also 100% agree with choose a hotel based on location, unless you plan to spend significant amount of time at the hotel.
You are right, before the renovation the Pen was a very very dated hotel. Now I think it renovated to a all-suite hotel.
WA is almost next to the Pen, the closest subways station I think is Wangfujing station, about 10 mins walk, if you plan go out frequently, 10 mins could be bit annoying.
