Courtyard Toronto Airport [Master Thread]

Introduction I am generally not a fan of the Courtyard hotel brand but for a quick airport overnight I sometimes only care about having a comfortable bed for a reasonable price rather than look for something a bit more upscale. In my opinion Sheraton Gateway is the best hotel in Toronto airport and I receive suite upgrades there plus they have a Club Lounge, but sometimes I would rather just save money and stay elsewhere. For this stay I found a good price with Best Rate Guarantee at Courtyard so I tried it for the first time. I came out positively surprised and I would recommend this hotel as an above average North American select service hotel particularly in light of the renovations. Location The hotel is not connected to the airport like Sheraton Gateway is, but is nonetheless fairly close to the airport - only 2 km away. Some other inexpensive hotels are farther away for example one of my favorites in a low price range is the DoubleTree Toronto Airport West but it’s 10 km away. The location of CY is a good compromise between Sheraton Gateway and some others which are far. The shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes which is better than the distant hotels which are every 40 minutes (DoubleTree YYZ West) or even 60 minutes (Homewood Suites, TownePlace Suites). Before arriving, I asked in the online chat feature at what time the shuttle bus arrives in terminal 1 and they told me it’s 20 and 50 minutes after the hour. I showed up at the bus stop at :20 and within a couple of minutes the bus was there so I did not have to wait. The shuttle bus was also on time when going back to the airport in the morning. Room I booked the standard room and I saw online that they also had other room types available: “larger guest room” and suites. According to the app I was not upgraded to anything; for only one night I did not mind but out of curiosity upon check-in I asked if they normally upgrade ambassador members. They said they can upgrade to the larger room type but that the room they gave us was on the top floor at the end of the hallway therefore one of the quietest rooms in the hotel. I knew that the larger room type is 32 square meters which is barely above the standard room which is 29 sq meters so I kept the room they assigned to us. Looking at the floor plan I am not even sure we had the standard room – our room seemed a bit bigger than others so unlike what they told us (and unlike what the app said), we might have been in the larger room. For a CY brand hotel, the room was actually quite nice. The rooms were renovated just last year and it shows. The bathroom counter and faucet are clearly brand new, the toilet and shower are in a separate area and it’s of a good size, and there is a stand-alone shower which I much prefer over hotels with a shower in a bathtub with curtain. The bedroom is functional and has lots of power plugs and USB ports by the bedside and also at the working desk near the TV. Besides the room having an air conditioning unit in the wall rather than central AC, I don’t have much negative to say about the room. Dining One of the reasons I am not a fan of the CY brand is the subpar breakfast benefit; the 10 CAD voucher per person per day is often not enough for breakfast (it should be 13 CAD per day by the way, due to exchange rate = 10 USD). However if I have an early morning flight, I actually do not want breakfast at the hotel because I will eat in the airport lounge, so in this situation having a food & beverage credit to use for dinner or for snack items at the Market was actually a positive for this particularly stay, rather than a negative. As a couple we had 20 CAD which was much preferable to 500 welcome points. Our F&B credit was enough for a two frozen meals to prepare in the microwave in the room, plus a couple of snacks. Overall Overall I was pleasantly surprised by the renovated hardware in the room, the convenient shuttle bus schedule, and the F&B credit which works to our favor when we don’t want breakfast. It has become harder recently to find a good Best Rate Guarantee with Marriott but at least this one worked and considering I paid less than 120 CAD (90 USD) for the night, when choosing 5k bonus Marriott points for BRG you could borderline consider that I “bought” 7k points for 90 USD and got the room almost for free. Anyway I got great value for the money and I will return if the price is right, when I am considering cheaper alternatives than the Sheraton Gateway, Westin, and Marriott.
