I foolishly didn't know the rules this summer when I flew through & they escorted me kindly but firmly through customs with my bags, pointed out which of the luggage had the alcohol in them, and then made me remove the alcohol. I was given a bag to put it in (they didn't want to touch it) and then walked over to a counter where a guy inventoried it and gave me my receipt.

All in all, had I known what was going on, I think it would have added about ten minutes going into Qatar and five minutes coming back to the airport. Not a big deal.

That being said, if you're going to be flying to a country that has secondary screening in the airport (like the US), I think you're risking having it taken from you because you technically can't carry the alcohol on board since it's over the minimum allowed onboard.
