Unless one of the passengers needs assistance from the other, if so a call to BA asking to be seated together would normally suffice - they would put a note into your reservations and usually accommodate.
I completely disagree in this instance - on a long day flight, leisure, excited holiday treat - why be separated from loved ones or friends? It's part of the fun of the holiday
