So, a few months ago, I called to cancel the Gold Business Card. I posted about the discussion I had with retention at the time, which was really unconventional. I explained that I wasn't getting much value out of the card, to justify the annual fee, and that the various bonus categories were nice, but I already get 5x on airfare with Plat and 2x on everything with my blue business card. She candidly told me that she agreed with me that I should close the card and that the blue business card was all I needed. She then added, "and if you think you are going to spend more than $50,000 in a year, there's nothing that keeps you from getting a second blue card and paying a second annual fee to get an additional $50,000 in spend for double points." (Paraphrase, but she volunteered that.)
I was actually giving it some thought, but then when Citi said that double cash points could be transferred to TY points, I decided that was an easier 2x everywhere opportunity.
Anyway, it's a little disappointing that Amex actually encouraged me to get a second of the same card but now it appears to be a ground for closure. I'm not, I don't think, a candidate for closure. I don't self-refer, I don't MS, and I have only 2 personal and 2 business Amex cards with a lot of legitimate day to day expenses. Still, if Amex is going to use multiple cards to shut people down they really shouldn't be suggesting it on retention calls.
