If you and your wife have a credit or debit card that is contactless that is the best way to go. You will be charged the lowest rate and if you reach the maximum daily rate it automatically calculates it.

If you buy an Oyster card there is a 5 quid deposit. Then you add monies to it ( or link a credit or debit card to it) as you go. So you need to make sure you always have enough funds on it. At the end of your trip you can apply to get any unused funds and the 5 quid deposit back.
Also consider using the buses as much as possible. You can see out the window and get a free tour. The tube is fine but can get crowded, hot and stuffy.
