Interestingly this is only the 2nd lost bag since at least 2005, and I've been travelling 80000 miles on a quiet year more or less every year since then. Last one was delayed when I was in Cuba, trying to replace "essentials" was a total nightmare (you soon discover how little in life is actually essential in that circumstance!) but it arrived within 48 hours and LATAM had sent US$100 cash with it as compensation, which was easy. So I suppose in hindsight I'm massively overdue for a lost bag to the point that I've become complacent with my hand baggage (they could have very easily lost both bags with the confusion around plane swaps and missed connections and then I'd have been completely stuffed), and ultimately getting reimbursed double the value is pretty good all things considered
