DL's policy is clear. Batteries go inside the carry-on. Thus, all that was required was for OP to remove the battery from its operational location and place it in the bag.

The policy also covers the requirements for packing the battery, e.g. separate packaging, not in contact with metal and the like. But, those requirements are not enforced and likely are unenforceable.
