For the older models, it's not that they couldn't be removed, it's more that it was harder to remove. You'd have to open up the suitcase, take everything out to access the lining, and unscrew the enclosure to remove the battery. Anyone with an older Away should have gotten an email providing the free upgrade options. Unfortunately, my Away was irreparably crushed during a gate check before I could get to the free upgrade point.

UA learned a costly lesson that security/police should not be called to "solve" customer service issues.
It's not that arguing with a GA doesn't have its place - I think it does, but less arguing and more constructive conversation. In this case, it's more of a "pick your battles" situation IMO.
