Certainly, doing this would contradict their published priority order, but based on daily observation of my flight DFW-LHR next week on Expertflyer, I'm not so sure. It was showing W0 with a full seat map, and J7 with more unassigned seats than that. Suddenly, J availability has shrunk to 4, and five seats have suddenly opened up in Premium Economy, even though it's still showing W0 (and Y has suddenly dropped from 7 to 2).
Although, if the priority has really changed, it will hurt my chances as discount economy passenger on this itinerary, I can't argue that it would be entirely unreasonable.
So the agent on the phone definitely was an expert / long time agent. In fact he said he’d been working the EXP / CK desk for nearly 20 years. He said the P / W fare getting high waitlist priority is relatively new and most agents don’t know about it.
i don’t know if it’s true or not... but that’s what the guy told me....
