Also, I don't really see an issue with 3 hours for YTZ-YYZ. "Normal people" maybe, but I've shown up at the curb at YYZ at T-30 for a TB flight and been sitting in my seat 12 minutes later, and I'm pretty confident I can get from YTZ-YYZ in under 2.5 hours.
Availability comes and goes. When I booked in late August for early July, there were 2 days available all July for 2 people, and it seemed like everyday there were different days available. One person was easier to find. There were also a couple IAD days. This wouldnt have worked via Europe (or ADD) - way over MPM to DPS.
And I believe you, its doable with the train even in the afternoon. This connection is irrelevant anyway, they couldve booked us on anything to LGA/EWR
