For clarity, you can have both time (unlimited) and value (pay per ride) on the same MetroCard. However, time will always be prioritized on the first swipe if both types exist on one card.

So, if the OP does not want to use the unlimited on the first day, should use a MetroCard with only value.

Also, there is a $1 fee for every new MetroCard purchase.
